Do Justice. Love Mercy. Hustle Humbly: an October 2022 youth immersion program in faith, justice, and vocation.

[W]hat does the Lord require of you  but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? – Micah 6:8, NRSV

We live in a beautiful yet broken world, and it can be a struggle to find our place within it. Thank God we don’t have to do it alone! This fall, a five-week youth series will explore how our faith calls us to do justice, love mercy, and discover who we are within and beyond the community of the church. The program will include a weekend in Boston, visiting several urban ministry sites and having some (chaperoned!) free time to explore.

This is a joint effort between the United Church of Underhill, Richmond Congregational UCC, and Williston Federated Church. The entire program is open to both Middle and High School youth. In order to best tailor our sessions to the youth who will participate, we are asking those interested in the trip to Boston to make a commitment by September 1, 2022. That commitment requires attending both an orientation session (Oct. 16) as well as the trip from Friday, Oct. 21 (leaving right after school) through Sunday, Oct. 23 (returning between 4 and 5 pm.) [See commitment form.]

Participation in this program may be a part of your church’s confirmation program. Speak with your pastor to learn more.

Series Overview

Sessions will be held on Sunday evenings from 4:00-5:30 pm. Locations vary, but the program will meet in-person.

Week 1 (Oct. 2): Intro to vocation (Meet at UCU): Getting to know our gifts and graces. Meet at your home church unless otherwise directed.

Week 2 (Oct. 9): Do Justice (Meet at Richmond Congregational UCC): Event with Vermont Interfaith Action.

Week 3 (Oct. 16): Love Mercy (Meet at UCU): We will prepare a meal for a local ministry and receive an orientation for next week’s trip to Boston. This session is required for those going on the trip.

Week 4 (Oct. 21-23): Weekend in Boston. We will visit several urban ministry sites and have (chaperoned) free time to explore personal interests.

Week 5 (Oct. 30): Hustle Humbly. Youth will share with one another the “hustles” they feel called to explore after the month’s activities. In the spirit of Halloween, youth are encouraged to come “in costume” explaining how their dress/props relate to roles they are excited about. Location TBD.
